Knysna Elephant Park, founded in 1994, was the first facility in South Africa dedicated to caring for orphaned African elephants.
Over its lifetime, it has rescued, rehabilitated, and raised more than forty elephants from various circumstances—culls, orphaned calves, relocations—some of which now form part of the resident herd.
What sets this place apart is the way it allows visitors to experience elephants on the elephants’ terms: in a free-range, semi-natural environment with no fences spoiling the encounter. Guests are able to feed the elephants, walk alongside them, observe their natural behaviours, and learn from expert handlers in a responsible, ethical setting.
